Best Wood Pellets for Ninja Woodfire

The Ninja Woodfire changed who gets to smoke. You no longer need a backyard the size of a parking lot or a six-hundred-dollar pellet rig to put real wood smoke on dinner. But the machine is only half of it. The wood you feed that little hopper decides whether you get clean, genuine smoke flavor or a faint whiff of nothing. Here's how to pick pellets that actually suit the Woodfire, and how to use them.

Why pellet quality matters more on a Woodfire, not less

The Ninja Woodfire runs a small hopper, around 54 grams of pellets for a smoke cycle. That's a tiny amount of wood compared to a big pellet grill. And here's the thing people miss: when you're working with that little fuel, the quality of each pellet matters more, not less. There's no big volume of wood to average out the weak stuff. Every pellet has to pull its weight.

This is exactly where cheap pellets fall apart. A lot of what's on the shelf is sprayed sawdust, oak and alder dust flavored with wood oils so the bag can claim "cherry" or "mesquite." Some is milled from young trees that never built the lignin real flavor comes from. Drop a scoop of that into a 54-gram hopper and you've got almost nothing to work with. Kona pellets are pressed from mature hardwood with the heartwood and density that carry flavor, which is the whole point when you only get a small charge of wood per cook. Wood should be wood, especially when there isn't much of it.

Every Kona pellet and Smoke Pod is designed to work with the Ninja Woodfire grill and pizza oven.

The native format: Smoke Pods

If you own a Woodfire, the easiest match is our Smoke Pods. We built them specifically for this machine. Each pod is a single-session, pre-measured pouch, roughly a hopper's worth, sealed fresh until you tear it open. No scooping, no scale, no guessing. Pour and cook.

They also solve the freshness problem. The Woodfire is a grab-and-go kind of smoker, the type you'll use on a random Tuesday if it's easy. Pods keep every portion sealed and fresh, so the smoker that's easiest to use is also the one you actually use. They come in single woods like Hickory, Apple, Cherry, and Oak, plus blends like Bourbon Barrel and the Variety Pack.

Prefer loose pellets? Our 2 lb bags and the 8-flavor Variety Pack work perfectly in the Woodfire hopper too. Pods are the convenience play. Bags are the value play. Both are the same wood.

How much pellet to use

Start by following the Ninja Woodfire's own guidance for filling the hopper, which is right around that 54-gram mark for a smoke cycle. A couple of pointers from experience:

  • Don't overpack it. More wood is not more flavor. Overloading the hopper on a small machine tends to produce thick, dirty smoke, which makes food taste bitter, not smokier.
  • Let it run the smoke cycle before the food's flavor sets. The Woodfire front-loads its smoke. Get the wood going and let the smoke turn thin and clean.
  • For a longer cook, plan to add wood. A quick chicken cook is one charge. A bigger or longer cook may need a refill, and a single Smoke Pod is sized as one charge by design.

Which flavor for which cook

This is where the Woodfire gets fun, because swapping a pod or a scoop is so easy you can match wood to food every time.

  • Chicken and wings: Apple or Cherry. Light, slightly sweet, won't bury the bird. Our 100% Apple is a great default here.
  • Pork: Hickory or a sweeter blend. Pork loves a fuller smoke, and 100% Hickory is the classic.
  • Beef and brisket: Oak as the clean backbone, hickory for punch. Go easy on mesquite over long cooks.
  • Fish and seafood: Alder or a mild fruit wood. Delicate food wants a gentle hand.
  • Pizza in the Woodfire oven: our Pizza Oven Blend is built for the high-heat, fast cook of the pizza setting.
  • Not sure yet: the Variety Pack lets you run a different wood every cook until you find your lineup.

If you want a printable cheat sheet, our Magnetic Wood Pellet and Smoking Guide pairs woods with foods and cook temps and sticks right to the machine.

Frequently asked questions

What pellets are best for the Ninja Woodfire?
Mature-hardwood pellets that burn clean, since the Woodfire uses a small hopper and every pellet counts. Kona Smoke Pods are designed specifically for the Ninja Woodfire as single-session, pre-measured pouches, and Kona's 2 lb bags work in the hopper too. Match the wood to the food: apple or cherry for chicken, hickory for pork, oak for beef.

How many pellets do you put in a Ninja Woodfire?
Follow Ninja's guidance for the hopper, which is around 54 grams for a smoke cycle. Don't overpack it. On a small machine, too much wood makes thick, bitter smoke rather than more flavor. For longer cooks, plan to add a fresh charge.

Are Kona Smoke Pods made for the Ninja Woodfire?
Yes. Kona Smoke Pods are designed to work with the Ninja Woodfire grill and pizza oven. Each pod is a single-session pouch sized roughly to one hopper charge, so you tear, pour, and cook with no measuring or leftover open bags.

Can you use regular wood pellets in a Ninja Woodfire?
Yes. Standard food-grade hardwood smoker pellets work in the Woodfire hopper, and Kona's 2 lb bags and 8-flavor Variety Pack are all compatible. Just avoid heating pellets or any pellet not meant for cooking. Quality matters most because the hopper is small.

What is the best Smoke Pod flavor for the Ninja Woodfire?
It depends on the cook. Apple and cherry suit chicken and lighter foods, hickory suits pork, and oak suits beef. If you're still finding your favorites, the Variety Pack lets you try a different wood each session.
