Kona Pellet Tips for Grills & Smokers
Getting the Most From Kona Pellets on Your Setup
Whether you're using a smoker tube on a gas grill, a dedicated pellet grill, or a traditional offset smoker, here's how to get the best results with Kona pellets.
If You're Using a Smoker Tube
A smoker tube is the simplest way to add real wood smoke to any grill you already own.
Setup:
- Fill the tube with Kona pellets:
- Quick grill (under 30 min): fill 1/3 full
- Standard smoke (30 min - 2 hours): fill half
- Extended smoke (2+ hours): fill 90%, refill as needed
- Ignite one end with a pencil torch or long lighter. Let the pellets burn with open flame for 5-10 minutes.
- Blow out the flame. Wait for clean smoke — when the thick white clouds thin to a barely visible wisp, you're ready.
- Place the tube on the cooler side of your grill. Close the lid to trap smoke.
Pro tip: For gas grills, turn off the burner directly under the smoker tube so the pellets smolder instead of burning fast.
If You're Using a Pellet Grill
Your pellet grill manages fuel automatically — just fill the hopper with Kona pellets and set your temperature.
Key tip: Lower temperatures mean more smoke flavor. At 225-250°F, the pellets smolder slowly and produce rich, flavorful smoke. Above 350°F, you're essentially grilling — the fire is too hot for significant smoke development.
For maximum smoke, keep temps at or below 275°F for the first 1-2 hours of your cook, then raise the temperature to finish if needed.
Pellet consumption: Roughly 1-2 lbs per hour at smoking temperatures. Plan ahead for long cooks.
If You're Using a Traditional Offset or Charcoal Smoker
Kona pellets work great as supplemental smoke alongside charcoal or logs. Use a smoker tube filled with Kona pellets to add a specific wood flavor on top of your primary fuel.
This is especially useful for layering flavors — burn oak logs for heat and add a tube of Cherry pellets for a fruity smoke accent.
